Beam Connectivity and the CAM Scale-Up programme

Focus and collaboration result in objective data proving the performance of the Beam Connectivity system.

Beam Connectivity’s mission is to put the C into CAM. Founded by four colleagues, Beam Connectivity believes the industry needs a resilient vehicle connectivity solution to underpin the development of autonomy and mobility services.

They’re tackling the issue of poor connectivity by providing an end-to-end, high performance connected vehicle solution. With their integrated system, Beam Connectivity wants to reset consumer expectations for connected car experiences. For example, showing they can reduce the latency of remote commands to under half a second, as well as improving cellular connection robustness.

The team originally engaged with Zenzic on the UK Connected and Automated Mobility Roadmap to 2030: CAM Creators Update, which shone a light on the company’s direction and key milestones. Details of the CAM Scale-Up programme followed, which aligned with Beam Connectivity’s belief that the industry must focus on connectivity as well as autonomy and mobility, which already enjoy a high degree of coverage.

After winning their place on the programme, the team set to work with the support of HORIBA MIRA, Millbrook-Culham and Convex. Co-founder and CTO, Rob Potter, says that strong cross-functional collaboration, with incredible focus from all partners really helped them progress at pace.

Programme results

Beam Connectivity’s testing programme has resulted in business success across three core areas.

Beam Connectivity’s testing journey

Broad and challenging objectives are met across a rigorous testing programme.

For Beam Connectivity, there were three key objectives to hit through their testing programme with CAM Testbed UK.

The first was a focus on cyber security, for which they underwent a threat modelling exercise and cyber security testing with HORIBA MIRA. Being a connected vehicle solution, cyber security is a core element and the solution must be robust.

The second priority was on electrical and radio frequency (RF) compliance. This resulted in a hardware performance test in HORIBA MIRA’s labs, to ensure the system performs as expected under the right electrical loads.

Level three of the testing programme was to get the Beam Connectivity system integrated and tested on private tracks. The system was integrated into vehicles with Millbrook-Culham, with the aim to prove that the solution is flexible and easy to integrate. Once integrated, the team were able to prove the robustness of the Beam Connectivity system, demonstrating a solution that can hold up to real-world road testing.

The results of the testing went above and beyond the team’s hopes. They now have hard data to support their business development activities, and a system that’s ready for market.

The team is hoping to work with testbeds and organisations across the industry looking for a high performance, secure and versatile end-to-end connected vehicle solution.

The future for Beam Connectivity is bright. The next step is to publish data from the testing programme to demonstrate their platform and its performance. Keep an eye on the Beam Connectivity website for more information.
