Launching the Feasibility Studies Competition: Building the Business Cases for CAM Deployment
Connected and Automated Mobility (CAM) is no longer a distant vision. Across the UK, pioneering organisations are testing, demonstrating, and proving technologies that will transform the way people and goods move. Zenzic, working in partnership with the Department for Business and Trade (DDBT) and Innovate UK, has been at the heart of this journey through the CAM Pathfinder programme.
Here, we introduce the Feasibility Studies competition – designed to unlock the investment decisions that will see the early commercial deployment of CAM in real-world environments.
Building on the foundations of CAM Pathfinder
The CAM Pathfinder programme was established to help the UK secure first-mover advantage in Europe, anchoring our capabilities and accelerating the journey from research and development to commercially viable CAM services.
Through CAM Pathfinder, projects have already demonstrated how CAM can improve critical infrastructure, strengthen supply chains, and provide new services for people and goods. From rural connectivity pilots to advanced freight logistics, CAM Pathfinder projects place the UK right at the forefront of the global CAM ecosystem.
This programme will also prove the value of strategic, targeted interventions – ensuring the UK is not only developing world-class technology but also creating viable business models that attract investment and deliver real societal benefit.
Why Feasibility Studies?
Despite the progress made, many organisations face final barriers to commercialisation. These may include developing a business case robust enough to attract investment, overcoming regulatory or operational hurdles, or demonstrating how CAM services will integrate into existing transport networks.
The Feasibility Studies competition is designed to tackle these challenges head-on.
- Purpose: To support UK organisations in building the mature business cases that will enable advanced, at-scale CAM deployments.
- Focus: Investigating solutions to real-world challenges that prevent CAM technologies from moving from trials into commercial operation.
- Impact: Unlocking wider commitment to CAM in both the public and private sectors, laying the groundwork for sustainable growth of the industry.
Competition details
- Eligible applicants: UK-registered organisations ready to target early commercial CAM deployment.
- Funding available: Between £100,000 and £250,000 per project.
- Duration: 6–9 months.
- Expected outcomes: Clear business cases that demonstrate the viability, scalability, and impact of deploying CAM vehicles and services in the UK.
By enabling these focused studies, Zenzic and its partners are working with organisations to understand and identify the – a vital step in the commercialisation journey.
Continuing the UK’s leadership in CAM
Zenzic has played a role in fostering collaboration in the supply chain, and supporting key stakeholders across government, academia, and industry. Through initiatives like the CAM Pathfinder and now the Feasibility Studies competition, we are reinforcing this leadership position – making the UK a showcase for how CAM can deliver safer, cleaner, more efficient transport.
As Zenzic Programme Director Mark Cracknell puts it:
“CAM technologies provide resilience to the critical infrastructure that underpins the UK’s economy. Through Pathfinder, UK organisations are empowered to provide meaningful solutions and reinforce the UK’s position at the forefront of the global CAM ecosystem.”
Feasibility Studies will carry this mission forward – helping projects take the final steps needed to bring their solutions to market.
