P‑CAL is part of the UK Government’s CAM Pathfinder Enhancements programme. It builds on earlier 5G CAL and V‑CAL work by moving autonomous logistics into a live port environment for the first time.
The project delivered an early demonstration of an autonomous terminal tractor operating within a defined part of the Port of Tyne. It focused on showing that autonomous movements can be carried out safely and reliably in a busy operational setting. This included integration with the port’s terminal operating system, coordination with live crane activity and the development of a secure communications and cybersecurity framework. A new Operational Design Domain for quayside operations was also created.
The work completed in P‑CAL provides the foundation for a wider multi‑vehicle trial that will be needed for full commercial readiness.
