The Cyber Resilience project will develop a proof-of-concept on how connected and automated vehicles will detect, understand, and report emerging cyber threats in real time, and is in partnership with Thales and CAM Testbed UK partners.
Vehicles are complex systems that are vulnerable to cyber-attacks, by building on previous Cyber Feasibility studies of 2019, and moving a step toward deployable solutions, this project will work to deliver insights on cyber resilience which are critical to CAM.

ResiCAV
Partners: HORIBA MIRA, BT, CFMS Services, Oxfordshire County Council, Techworks, Thales, WMG
The use of current tools and techniques applied to static analysis of vehicles will be applied to real-time monitoring and response. It will develop requirements for a cyber security operations centre and extend the application of AI and data visualisation techniques.
DT-4-CT
Partners: Chilton Computing, Huduma, Oxfordshire County Council, Science and Technology Facilities Council
Researching cyber security threats to connected vehicle networks and proposing a cyber security testing methodology using a digital twinning approach to identify and measure dynamic threats and suggest mitigation strategies.
Project Meili
Partners: IDIADA UK, Crypta Labs, Teskalabs
Evaluation of new cyber security risks arising from the increasing connectivity in modern vehicles. Based on the network analysis we perform and the threats we uncover, we will define and demonstrate a modular hardware and software platform to test and evaluate the impact of C-ITS on traffic safety, driver confidence, and infrastructure development.
PNT Cyber Resilience
Partners: Spirent, WMG
Positioning, Navigation, and Timing (PNT) products and services will be examined to demonstrate and determine the feasibility of a new observer-based technique to ‘attack’ and test CAV PNT-related functions in both controlled and real-world scenarios
Cyber security is fundamental to the successful deployment of CAM in a safe and beneficial way. The UK is a world leader in the cyber space and is well positioned to lead the world in ensuring that CAM can be deployed safely and securely. Collaboration within the UK’s world-class Cyber Security sector is crucial to tackle potential cyber threats and challenges.
"There is understandably real optimism about the possibilities CAVs will bring to the UK in terms of improving road safety, reducing travel time and making automotive transport accessible to all. As with any technology, rigorous cyber security testing is of paramount importance to protecting users. A driverless car is a device connected to a network and no connected device is immune to being hacked. Cisco is committed to making the UK the safest place to be online, and in the age of the self-driving car, real-time threat intelligence services will be vital to keeping road users safe."
Maria Hernandez
Head of Innovation, Cisco UK and Ireland
"Chilton Computing is excited to lead the DT-4-CT consortium to work with leading CAV players in the UK to develop threat-aware cyber security capabilities and services for the next generation intelligent transport systems. This project will enable the partners to examine the practical challenges, technical feasibility, and commercial opportunities of developing a digital twinning approach for a holistic cyber security testing and certification strategy to be used with emerging networked CAV ecosystems."
Dr Erica Yang
Managing Director, Chilton Computing
"Secure and robust data privacy of CAVs is one of the important aspects of Honda's commitment in providing future mobility solutions. We are delighted to participate in this important project."
Adrian Killham
Senior Vice President, Honda R&D Europe (UK) Ltd
"F-Secure is delighted to have been selected to participate in the Connected and Autonomous Vehicle Cyber Security Feasibility Studies programme. We are passionate about securing technologies, like autonomous vehicles, that have potential to change the world around us."
Ed Parsons
Managing Director, F-Secure
"The award of the ResiCAV project to HORIBA MIRA and its partners signifies a critical milestone as the UK strives to become a world-leader in automotive cyber security and vehicle resilience. If we are to successfully embrace the benefits of CAV technology and solutions, we must appreciate the critical dependency between connectivity and autonomy – and therefore the importance of designing resilient solutions and addressing future cyber security challenges."
Dr Geoff Davis
Chief Strategy Officer, HORIBA MIRA
"The UK has one of the world’s leading cyber resilience industries. We have incredible academic institutions and testing facilities across the country, and have paved the way for cyber security technology development since the birth of the internet. With the advent of self-driving vehicles, the complexity of cyber defences will increase as thousands of vehicles, pieces of road-side infrastructure and connecting systems need to share data securely. This is an opportunity for the UK to build on the decades of experience we already have and once again set the standards for the rest of the world to follow."
Richard Porter
Technology and Innovation Director, Zenzic
"The connected and self-driving vehicle sector is set to be worth £62 billion by 2030, with safer roads and smoother, more accessible journeys for all. Whether we’re turning cars into Wi-Fi connected hotspots or equipping them with millions of lines of code, we must consider the new challenges of putting this technology into practice. Today’s £1.2 million funding boost will help to guarantee the future safety and security of self-driving vehicles, both in the UK and globally."
George Freeman
Future of Transport Minister
"Many of the cars on sale today include assistance systems that drivers are familiar with, like cruise control and lane-keeping technology. Future vehicles will be even more advanced. This funding will help ensure this technology is safe and secure, and will grow our status as a global leader in defining the future of mobility and, in particular, connected and autonomous vehicles."
Nadhim Zahawi
Business Minister
"We are excited to start work on project Meili. We are keen to understand the potential threats that might lurk in the new technologies and functionalities that are being developed. Only by understanding the risks are we able to make clear recommendations on how to protect against them and how to test vehicles to make sure the protection is sufficient."
Jean-Paul Ludig
Head of Operations, Crypta Labs
"GNSS has proved to be a fantastically successful system capable of providing highly accurate and precise navigation and timing data to enable many modern applications including vehicle navigation. However, GNSS signals received on earth are very weak and are vulnerable to interference or spoofing which can leave key systems open to cyber-attack. This project is very exciting for Spirent as it enables us to demonstrate techniques to evaluate the resilience of mitigation strategies. The findings from this project will lead to better engineered, much more secure systems which will improve road safety."
Guy Buesnel
PNT Security Technologist, Spirent
