This project conducts a theoretical analysis with practical experimentation to conduct an extensive review of existing safety standards, risk assessment methodologies, and legal frameworks to create a preliminary set of quantifiable measures to help to define the concept of a “careful and competent driver”. It also suggests an alternative stopping criterion, enabling a more efficient validation of an automated driving system.

Objectives for this project include the following:
- Generate a framework for quantifying acceptable AV risk, improving CAV validation.
- Create a robust testing methodology and providing recommendations for updating AV standards and regulations.
- Define a stopping criterion based on the statistical distribution of the test results.
