🚗 Why CAM, Why Now?

The conversation around Connected and Automated Mobility (CAM) in the UK is changing. It’s no longer about what’s possible—it’s about where CAM can deliver real value.

Zenzic’s new report, UK CAM Roadmap to 2035 – Opportunities for CAM, answers the strategic question: Why CAM? Backed by workshops, interviews, and evidence from across industry and government, the report connects CAM to the UK’s biggest transport, economic and social challenges—and shows where we should act next.

Here are five key messages from the report that make the case for CAM as a national priority:

  1. đŸ›Ąïž CAM Directly Supports Vision Zero and Safer Roads

One of CAM’s most immediate and measurable benefits is safety. With 94% of road collisions caused by human error, automated systems—supported by digital infrastructure and real-time data—have the potential to significantly reduce crashes, fatalities and serious injuries.
The report highlights use-cases and how CAM enables safety features like ADAS, V2X communication and automated emergency responses, and how full autonomy could take that further.
📉 3,900 lives could be saved by 2030 with widespread deployment of these technologies (Opportunities for CAM, p.13).

  1. đŸ› ïž CAM is a Practical Solution to Transport Driver Shortages

Sectors like logistics and public transport face acute driver shortages and an ageing demographic. CAM technologies offer a direct response—enabling night-time operation, depot automation, and remote fleet oversight.
Rather than replacing jobs, CAM is reshaping roles—from drivers to system operators and maintenance teams—creating new career pathways while reducing operational strain (Opportunities for CAM, pp.14–15).

  1. đŸ’· CAM Underpins Economic Growth and Global Competitiveness

CAM is forecast to contribute up to ÂŁ66 billion per year to the UK economy by 2030. It supports high-value job creation, opens new market opportunities in software and sensors, and unlocks productivity gains across sectors.
The report outlines how CAM contributes to a digitally-led, export-ready mobility economy—especially in areas like AI, simulation, and automated logistics, where the UK already has a competitive edge (Opportunities for CAM, p.16).

  1. 🚌 CAM Can Tackle Transport Inequality and Rural Exclusion

CAM isn’t just a tech opportunity—it’s a social one. The roadmap highlights how on-demand automated shuttles and localised services can fill gaps in underserved rural areas, improving access to work, healthcare and education.
This supports the UK’s goals around social inclusion, advancing inclusive access and mobility options for people of all capacities and life stages (Opportunities for CAM, pp.18–21, 22–24).

  1. 🌍 CAM Aligns with the UK’s Net Zero and Infrastructure Goals

CAM technologies support smarter, greener infrastructure. From eco-driving and emissions reduction to real-time road condition monitoring and predictive maintenance, CAM offers tools that directly improve system efficiency.
It also supports modal integration, reducing congestion and enabling better use of road space—critical for Net Zero, sustainable growth, and resilience in the face of climate disruption (Opportunities for CAM, pp.26–31).
