Cyber Resilience
The Cyber Resilience project will develop a proof-of-concept on how connected and automated vehicles will detect, understand, and report emerging cyber threats in real time, and is in partnership with Thales and CAM Testbed UK partners.
Vehicles are complex systems that are vulnerable to cyber-attacks, by building on previous Cyber Feasibility studies of 2019, and moving a step toward deployable solutions, this project will work to deliver insights on cyber resilience which are critical to CAM.
Cyber Resilience Reports
Prototype Tool Suite
This report provides a description of the approach used and the software, documentation and skills required to realise the demonstrator capability. This includes worked Examples of their use to provide cyber resilience in real-world automotive systems.
Proof of Concept Demonstrator
A report on the tool suite covering how and in what form the tool suite might be made available for use by commercial and academic researchers, allowing them to start to integrate the Cyber Resilience methodology into existing practices.
Legal Report
This report provides a route to a per vehicle legally defensible argument that the cyber vulnerability of the braking system was reduced ALARP “As Low As Reasonably Practicable” using this significant difference approach and based on the dynamic distributed ledger.
Compliance Report
This report provides a route to obtain a per vehicle real-time compliance argument based on the implementation of and use of a Dynamic Distributed Ledger
Exploitation Plan
This report provides an updated roadmap outlining next steps to improve cyber-resilience of automotive systems using Cyber Resilience tools & methodologies. This includes:
- A roadmap for continuing development and the funding required.
- Plans to exploit and disseminate tools and methods on a global basis.
- A roadmap to the commercial availability of tool and legal support for the Cyber Resilience methodology.

What are the Cyber Feasibility Studies?
Zenzic, in partnership with the Centre for Connected and Autonomous Vehicles (CCAV) and Innovate UK, invested £1.2 million in 7 projects to support the development of connected and self-driving vehicle cyber security testing capabilities.
The projects tested and examined solutions to:
- Measure and maintain cyber-physical resilience and identify vulnerabilities, supporting the creation and testing of cyber-physical and software architectures, best practice in design and lifetime management
- Provide specifications to support the creation of new cyber test facilities
- Explore commercial opportunities to develop new cyber-related services

CAV Shield
Partners: Honda R&D Europe (UK) Ltd, IBM, Nexor, Toshiba, University of Bristol
Focuses on the Data privacy aspects of connected and autonomous vehicles (CAVs) to identify methodologies for real-time identification and measurement of vulnerabilities in CAV Networks to enable widespread implementation to protect large vehicle fleets. This includes long-term commercial viability of cyber-related services for the CAM industry.
BeARCAT
Partners: Cisco, Millbrook Proving Ground, Telefonica UK, WMG
BeARCAT will explore the feasibility of a coherent, holistic approach to Cyber Security testing for Connected Vehicle networks in the UK through CAV Testbeds.
V2X Vulnerability Mapping
Partners: F-Secure
Development and application of testing methodologies for V2X infrastructure that are effective in providing comprehensive technical assessment of cyber risk exposure in a cost-effective and scalable manner, while allowing focused detection on the points that matter most.
ResiCAV
Partners: HORIBA MIRA, BT, CFMS Services, Oxfordshire County Council, Techworks, Thales, WMG
The use of current tools and techniques applied to static analysis of vehicles will be applied to real-time monitoring and response. It will develop requirements for a cyber security operations centre and extend the application of AI and data visualisation techniques.
DT-4-CT
Partners: Chilton Computing, Huduma, Oxfordshire County Council, Science and Technology Facilities Council
Researching cyber security threats to connected vehicle networks and proposing a cyber security testing methodology using a digital twinning approach to identify and measure dynamic threats and suggest mitigation strategies.
Project Meili
Partners: IDIADA UK, Crypta Labs, Teskalabs
Evaluation of new cyber security risks arising from the increasing connectivity in modern vehicles. Based on the network analysis we perform and the threats we uncover, we will define and demonstrate a modular hardware and software platform to test and evaluate the impact of C-ITS on traffic safety, driver confidence, and infrastructure development.
PNT Cyber Resilience
Partners: Spirent, WMG
Positioning, Navigation, and Timing (PNT) products and services will be examined to demonstrate and determine the feasibility of a new observer-based technique to ‘attack’ and test CAV PNT-related functions in both controlled and real-world scenarios
